Development of rational method for the design safety of pipe strength; probabilistic reliability scheme
Design and operation of nuclear power plants in Japan are based on safety factor which is determined by experiences and is not by theory. As a result, the safety margin of the system against a particular failure mode can’t be clearly quantified and one can only know whether the system is safe or not.
Though it obviously has large safety margin, these situation never allow flexible desing and operation. This research aims at establishing the method for rationalizing them by evaluating the safety margin quantitatively with probabilistic reliability method.
